How to Calculate Goals Per Game
Goals Per Game = Total Goals ÷ Games Played
GPG = Goals ÷ Games
A player who scores 20 goals in 25 appearances has a GPG of 20 ÷ 25 = 0.80. This means an average of 0.80 goals for each appearance across the selected matches. It does not mean the player scored in exactly 80% of those matches: several goals could have come in a single game.
Use appearances actually played, rather than all fixtures on a team’s schedule. Goals and appearances must cover the same set of matches. For example, do not divide all-competition goals by league-only appearances. Whole-number totals are usual; decimal goals are accepted for hypothetical averages. Games must be whole numbers greater than zero.

What Does Goals Per Game Mean in Football?
GPG means goals per game: the average number of goals scored per appearance in your dataset. It is a simple way to describe scoring frequency across a season, tournament or career. Zero goals in 20 games gives 0.00 GPG; a rate above 1.00 means there are more goals than appearances.
Sample size matters. Two goals in one appearance produces 2.00 GPG, but tells you much less about sustained scoring than a full season. When sharing a rate, include the goals, appearances, competition and period so readers can see what it represents.
Goals Per Game vs Goals Per 90
Goals per game uses goals ÷ appearances. Goals per 90 uses (goals ÷ minutes played) × 90. A player with 10 goals in 20 appearances has 0.50 GPG. If those appearances total 1,200 minutes, the same player has 0.75 goals per 90.
A substitute making many short appearances can have a different GPG and per-90 profile from a player regularly completing 90 minutes. Per 90 provides playing-time context; GPG describes output per appearance. Neither measure is universally better, and a high per-90 rate from very few minutes can be misleading if presented without the minutes total.
Factors GPG Does Not Measure
GPG alone does not account for minutes played, starting versus substitute appearances, position, penalties, tactical role, competition strength, age group, team style or opponent quality. It also says nothing directly about chance creation, defensive work or contributions without the ball.
A higher figure means more goals per appearance in the selected data. It does not prove a player is the better footballer. If you want a non-penalty rate, enter non-penalty goals consistently for both players and clearly label the comparison when sharing it. Use the same data source and counting rules wherever possible.
